The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is turning its attention towards implementing an important amendment to the Africa Champions League system, following reports that there is preliminary approval within the corridors of CAF for a proposal to increase the number of clubs participating in the tournament starting from next season.
According to Moroccan site "Sport 7", members of the CAF Executive Committee have expressed their initial approval of the project, awaiting its official adoption during upcoming meetings. The report indicates that the file has moved from the study phase to the procedural arrangements phase.
The source added that the indicators within CAF have become more positive compared to the previous period, especially after the competitions committee's decision to postpone the deadline for submitting the participating clubs' lists to mid-August. This gives the African Football Confederation additional time to study the proposal and complete its procedures before the start of the new season.
The report clarified that the anticipated increase will be restricted to the African Champions League, without including the African Confederation Cup.
Hani Abou Rida, the President of the Egyptian Football Association, has proposed to the African Football Confederation to increase the number of clubs participating in the CAF Champions League. This amendment would benefit clubs from the four highest-ranked countries in CAF competitions: Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, and South Africa.
If the proposal is officially adopted, Egyptian football will be represented by three clubs in the upcoming CAF Champions League: Zamalek, Pyramids, and Al Ahly.
