U.S. President Donald Trump praised Argentine star Lionel Messi after his impressive performance in the match against England in the 2026 World Cup semi-final, which ended with Argentina winning 2-1.

Trump's remarks came during preparations for the final match, where he stated: "We are gathered tonight in New York awaiting the final showdown on Sunday between two amazing teams; Spain and Argentina."

He added about Messi's pass in the second goal moment: "I saw that pass made by Messi, and although I don't understand this sport as much as those in this room, I understand sports in general."

He added: "I was watching Messi, and he was being closely marked by a great player. Suddenly, he moved to the right while the other player stood still."

Trump stated: "Messi had enough time to pass the ball, and the moment was unbelievably perfect, and that's how the match ended... It was genius."

He confirmed that great players are capable of repeating such extraordinary moments continuously, saying: "These great players repeat such moments over and over again, as if they were born with a special and additional talent."

He concluded by mentioning the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo, saying: "I know that Ronaldo is one of them too, and I had the chance to get to know him over the years, he is a great person."
