Sunderland has officially announced the signing of Belgian right-back Thomas Meunier on a free transfer after his contract with Lille expired. The 34-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the Black Cats and will wear the number 12 shirt for the upcoming season.
Thomas Munié has significant experience at the highest levels, having played over 550 matches with clubs, in addition to 83 international appearances for the Belgium national team. He also represented his country in the 2026 World Cup this summer.
Throughout his professional career, Meunier has played for Club Brugge, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, and Trabzonspor, winning several domestic titles, most notably the league and cup in Belgium and France.
Sunderland's sporting director, Florent Ghisolfi, confirmed that the club is pleased to sign a player with such vast experience, noting that Mounier will add quality, leadership, and professionalism both on and off the pitch.
The Belgian player expressed his happiness about joining Sunderland, confirming that playing in the Premier League was a challenge he wanted to take on, and that the club's ambition and European participation were among the main reasons for his decision to transfer.
Mounier is expected to join Sunderland's training at the beginning of August, preparing for the new season that will see the team compete both domestically and in Europe.
