Seven medical staff members are facing charges of negligence believed to have contributed to the death of Diego Maradona, who passed away from a heart attack and fluid accumulation in the lungs shortly after undergoing surgery. Among the most notable accused is his personal doctor, Leopoldo Luque, who attended all sessions and defends himself by presenting recordings and scientific research to refute the allegations.
A courtroom session witnessed a controversial moment when lawyer and his team requested to present autopsy photos of Diego Maradona, causing one of the late player's daughters to break down in tears and shout insults at the defendants before leaving the room, prompting the judge to temporarily suspend the session.
The chaos was not limited to the defendants, as it extended to the lawyers who engaged in heated verbal disputes, forcing judges to intervene multiple times. Judge Alberto Gaig described some of their behaviors as "childish." The trial also featured unusual moments, including the use of a large model of Maradona's house to assist witnesses in explaining details of his final days, amid the ongoing case that was restarted from scratch after the previous judge was removed due to her secret involvement in a documentary project about the case.
